National Invest in Veterans Week®: A Transformative Alternative to NVSBW

As the SBA marks its 11th annual National Veterans Small Business Week (NVSBW) from November 11-15, 2024, National Invest in Veterans Week® (NIVW) is redefining the scope and impact of veteran entrepreneurship. While NVSBW celebrates the contributions of veteran-owned businesses, NIVW offers a comprehensive, year-round framework designed to address systemic challenges, foster innovation, and expand opportunities for veterans globally.

As the SBA marks its 12th annual National Veterans Small Business Week (NVSBW) from November 11-15, 2025, National Invest in Veterans Week® (NIVW) is redefining the scope and impact of veteran entrepreneurship. While NVSBW celebrates the contributions of veteran-owned businesses, NIVW offers a comprehensive, year-round framework designed to address systemic challenges, foster innovation, and expand opportunities for veterans globally.

This article explores how NIVW surpasses the achievements of NVSBW by focusing on global reach, dynamic programs, and advocacy-driven solutions to empower veteran entrepreneurs at every stage.

NIVW’s Broader Vision for Veteran Entrepreneurship

1. Global Scale vs. National Celebration

NVSBW highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of veterans within the U.S., offering events through SBA resources like VBOCs, SCORE mentoring, and workshops. These initiatives are valuable but inherently localized and time-bound.

In contrast, NIVW spans 62 global markets, connecting veterans to a robust ecosystem of resources through platforms like FloridaVeterans.com, GermanyVeterans.com, and SingaporeVeterans.com. This international reach ensures veterans can explore global markets and opportunities tailored to their industries.

Empowering Female Veterans Through FeMil℠

NIVW stands out with its specialized initiatives like FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠, which address the unique challenges faced by female veterans. These programs provide:

Advocating for Systemic Change

Going Beyond SBA Certifications

NVSBW promotes SBA-backed programs like SDVOSB certifications and Veteran Advantage loans. While these resources are essential, they often fall short in addressing larger systemic barriers like access to capital and federal contracting complexities.

NIVW takes advocacy further by championing legislative reforms through the Invest in Veterans Stimulus Act, which includes:

  • Startup Tax Credits to reduce financial risks.

  • Low-Interest Loans tailored to veteran-owned businesses.

  • Streamlined Federal Contracting to make government opportunities accessible.

For more on these efforts: Championing the Complete the Mission Act of 2024.

Leveraging Technology Through the π Domains

NIVW’s π (Pledge to Invest) = Veteran Businesses℠ domains represent a revolutionary approach to veteran entrepreneurship. These platforms bridge gaps in mentorship, resources, and global collaboration, including:

  • π.guru: A mentorship network connecting veterans with industry leaders.

  • π.directory: A global database of veteran-owned businesses to foster collaboration.

  • π.solutions: Tailored strategies to overcome business challenges.

These tools empower veterans to scale their businesses, leveraging technology to access opportunities across industries.

Economic and Social Impact of NIVW

Veteran-owned businesses contribute over $1.2 trillion annually to the U.S. economy, with NVSBW highlighting these contributions. However, NIVW amplifies this impact by fostering international collaboration and innovation, ensuring veterans are positioned to lead in industries like AI, renewable energy, and healthcare.

NIVW’s Focus Areas:

  • Job Creation: Supporting veteran-owned enterprises to drive employment growth.

  • Economic Expansion: Connecting businesses to international markets for scaling opportunities.

  • Leadership Development: Promoting resilience and innovation among underserved veterans.

For inspiring examples of leadership: Kevin D. Shoun: Transformational Leadership in the Spirit of Jimmy Carter.

Angel Shuford, Vice President and CFO of National Invest in Veterans Week® (NIVW), has championed initiatives like FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠ to bridge these gaps. Drawing from her vision and experience, Angel’s lessons emphasize resilience, adaptability, and the power of mentorship in transforming entrepreneurial challenges into opportunities.

The entrepreneurial spirit of female veterans reflects the strength, discipline, and leadership cultivated during their military service.

This comprehensive article explores these lessons, outlines actionable strategies for addressing systemic barriers, and presents a compelling call to action for legislative support to empower female veteran entrepreneurs.

Lesson 1: Resilience is the Foundation of Entrepreneurship

Angel Shuford likens female veterans to Fe (iron)—strong, resilient, and unyielding under pressure. This strength, she believes, is the foundation upon which female veterans can build thriving businesses.

How Resilience Translates to Business Success

  • Overcoming Adversity: The military instills the ability to face challenges head-on. In business, this translates to tackling setbacks like funding rejections or market competition.

  • Focus Under Pressure: Entrepreneurs often operate in high-stakes environments. Female veterans, accustomed to making critical decisions, excel in these conditions.

Actionable Takeaways

  • Build daily habits that reinforce mental resilience, such as goal setting and reflection.

  • Cultivate a mindset of persistence, viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth.

Lesson 2: Adaptability Leads to Transformative Leadership

While resilience provides the strength to endure, adaptability transforms challenges into opportunities. Angel highlights the symbolism of Pb (lead)—a material known for its flexibility and ability to bear weight—as the essence of transformative leadership.

The Importance of Adaptability in Entrepreneurship

  • Navigating Change: In rapidly evolving industries, adaptability allows entrepreneurs to pivot strategies and embrace innovation.

  • Carrying Responsibility: As leaders, female veterans must guide teams, manage resources, and make decisions that impact the future of their businesses.

Actionable Takeaways

  • Develop a learning mindset by staying informed about industry trends and emerging technologies.

  • Practice flexibility by experimenting with new approaches and remaining open to constructive feedback.

Lesson 3: Mentorship Accelerates Growth

Mentorship has been a cornerstone of Angel Shuford’s initiatives, offering female veterans access to seasoned entrepreneurs and industry leaders. She emphasizes that mentorship is more than guidance—it’s a pathway to building confidence, expanding networks, and accelerating growth.

Why Mentorship Matters

  • Knowledge Transfer: Mentors share insights and strategies that help mentees avoid common pitfalls.

  • Networking Opportunities: Mentors open doors to partnerships, collaborations, and funding opportunities.

  • Confidence Building: Support from experienced leaders empowers female veterans to pursue ambitious goals.

Actionable Takeaways

  • Seek out mentors who align with your business goals and values.

  • Leverage mentorship opportunities by preparing specific questions and actionable plans.

Lesson 4: Collaboration Drives Innovation

Angel advocates for fostering collaboration among female veteran entrepreneurs to drive innovation and collective success. By sharing resources, expertise, and support, women can overcome systemic barriers more effectively.

Benefits of Collaboration

  • Shared Resources: Collaborative networks provide access to funding, technology, and market insights.

  • Collective Learning: Entrepreneurs can learn from each other’s successes and challenges.

  • Stronger Communities: Collaboration fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Actionable Takeaways

  • Join industry groups or veteran-focused networks to connect with like-minded entrepreneurs.

  • Participate in events, workshops, and initiatives that encourage knowledge sharing.

Introduction
Female veteran entrepreneurs represent an essential yet often overlooked demographic within the entrepreneurial community. These women bring discipline, leadership, and resilience honed through military service to their business ventures. Yet, they face unique systemic challenges, including barriers to capital, inadequate mentorship networks, and difficulty accessing government resources.

National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), under the visionary leadership of Angel Shuford, Vice President & CFO, has been instrumental in addressing these issues. Initiatives like FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠ provide tailored support for female veterans at all stages of their entrepreneurial journey. Legislators now have the opportunity to build on this momentum by supporting transformative solutions, such as the proposed Invest in Veterans Stimulus Act.

The Challenge: Systemic Barriers for Female Veteran Entrepreneurs

Access to Capital

Surveys conducted during the Jacksonville Vetrepreneur Summits revealed that over 67% of veteran entrepreneurs identify a lack of funding as their primary barrier to success. Female veterans face even greater difficulties securing loans or venture capital due to biases and systemic inequities in the financial system.

Mentorship and Networking

Despite their strong leadership skills, female veterans frequently lack access to structured mentorship programs and networks of experienced entrepreneurs. The 2018 Jacksonville Summit showed that while 56% of veteran entrepreneurs attended business events, most lacked access to sustainable mentorship and collaborative networks.

Scaling and Sustainability

While female veterans are eager to start businesses—70% planned to launch ventures within two years in the 2018 survey—many face challenges scaling their operations. Without targeted resources and government support, these businesses struggle to achieve long-term sustainability.

FeMil℠ and FeMil Lead℠: A Comprehensive Solution

Jacksonville, FL — December 29, 2024 — National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW), a global organization dedicated to supporting veteran-owned businesses and fostering economic empowerment, announces the appointment of Kevin D. Shoun as Senior Advisor for Civic Leadership and Policy Development. This addition strengthens NIVW’s mission of advocating for veterans, building opportunities for their businesses, and amplifying their voices on a global stage.

Kevin’s career as a decorated U.S. Army veteran, entrepreneur, civic leader, and mental health advocate makes him uniquely suited to spearhead NIVW’s advocacy and leadership initiatives. His appointment also marks a meaningful moment for Angel Shuford, Vice President and CFO of NIVW, who credits Kevin as the most influential leader of her military career.

“Kevin was my First Sergeant during my time in Army aviation,” Angel shared. “His leadership inspired me to pursue education and shaped my approach to leadership today. He taught me that great leaders elevate those around them, and I’m honored to now call him a colleague at NIVW.”

Kevin D. Shoun: A Legacy of Leadership and Service

Military Career: A Leader Who Inspires Leaders

Kevin served as a First Sergeant in U.S. Army aviation, where he led teams of over 100 personnel and managed resources exceeding $2 million. His ability to inspire, mentor, and guide those under his command became a hallmark of his leadership style.

His mentorship extended beyond professional duties, as Kevin consistently encouraged his team members to pursue their education and personal growth. Angel Shuford, now a senior leader herself, credits Kevin’s encouragement as the spark that motivated her to achieve more than she thought possible.

“Kevin’s belief in me changed the course of my life,” Angel reflected. “He taught us to be resilient, to seek solutions, and to believe in our ability to overcome any challenge. That’s the kind of leader he was—and continues to be.”

Advocating for Mental Health

Kevin’s impact reaches far beyond the military. He is a tireless advocate for mental health, especially in the military community. His powerful article, “Why is Suicide So Difficult to Talk About?”, published in Aviation Digest, won the 2019 Article of the Year Award.

In this deeply personal and compelling piece, Kevin shared his experiences with loss and grief, shedding light on the stigma surrounding mental health discussions in the military. The article resonated widely, prompting meaningful conversations and driving awareness about the importance of addressing mental health openly.

“Leadership doesn’t end at tactical success,” Kevin explained. “It includes fostering an environment where people feel safe discussing challenges, including mental health. Ignoring these conversations can cost lives, and we have to do better.”

Civic Leadership: Empowering Communities

Wiregrass Food Drive: A Lifeline for Southeast Alabama

In 2020, Kevin led the Wiregrass Area Food Drive, an initiative that provided essential resources to families in need across Southeast Alabama. Partnering with the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, Kevin mobilized the community with multiple donation drop-off points and an incentive raffle featuring a Yeti Cooler Summer Fun Prize Pack.

The campaign demonstrated Kevin’s ability to inspire action and create tangible impact, even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The food drive wasn’t just about collecting items,” Kevin said. “It was about uniting the community to help each other. Leadership is about service, whether you’re wearing a uniform or not.”

Supporting Military Families

Kevin’s leadership extends to his real estate career, where he has assisted military families with relocation and housing needs. As a REALTOR® based in Southeast Alabama, he has navigated complex transactions with empathy and expertise, particularly during times of crisis. His ability to provide stability for military families during uncertain times has earned him widespread respect and gratitude.

A Vision for National Invest In Veterans Week®

Kevin’s appointment comes at a time of growth and transformation for NIVW. In 2024, the organization expanded to 62 global platforms, providing veterans with localized resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities. This expansion underscores NIVW’s commitment to empowering veterans at every stage of their entrepreneurial journeys.

Global Expansion Highlights

14 U.S. state-specific platforms delivering localized support for veteran entrepreneurs in states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming.
29 international country-specific platforms that connect veterans with opportunities in countries like Australia, Germany, and Saudi Arabia.
9 regional or organizational platforms fostering collaboration across geographic and economic boundaries, such as Scandinavia and Central America.

These platforms create a comprehensive network that ensures veterans have access to the tools they need, no matter where they are in the world.

Kevin’s Role as Senior Advisor for Civic Leadership and Policy Development

In his new role, Kevin will focus on three core pillars to advance NIVW’s mission:

Policy Advocacy
Kevin will champion policies that address the unique challenges faced by veterans, including access to funding, mental health resources, and support for military families. His firsthand experience as a veteran and community leader gives him the insight needed to drive meaningful change.

Civic Engagement
Building on his success with initiatives like the Wiregrass Food Drive, Kevin will lead community-focused programs that empower veterans and their families while fostering collaboration and resilience.

Veteran Empowerment
Through mentorship and education, Kevin will help veterans navigate the transition to civilian life, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in business and leadership roles.

A Commitment to Empowerment and Resilience

Kevin’s appointment represents more than a new leadership role—it embodies NIVW’s commitment to empowering veterans worldwide. His ability to inspire, advocate, and lead will play a critical role in shaping the organization’s future and ensuring that veterans have the resources they need to thrive.

“This opportunity is about creating lasting change,” Kevin said. “Veterans bring unmatched skills and leadership to the table, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they have the tools and opportunities to succeed.”

In December 2024, Shuford surprised many by announcing his decision to step down from all formal roles for NIVW. This decision was made not out of necessity, but as a personal choice to prioritize simplicity and mindfulness. For Shuford, retirement does not mean stepping into a different phase of public life—it means truly stepping away.

While his wife, Angel Shuford, and trusted colleague, LTC Rickey L. Pope, now lead NIVW into the future, Shuford has chosen to retreat from public engagements entirely. This break from the limelight reflects his philosophy that even leaders deserve the chance to rest, recharge, and redefine their lives on their terms.

Reflections on a Storied Legacy

Shuford’s career accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary. During his time with NIVW, he:

Secured Congressional Recognition: National Invest In Veterans Week® became a nationally celebrated initiative, entered into the Congressional Record as a testament to its impact.

Expanded Internationally: The movement spread across 40 global markets, including the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Germany, fostering a worldwide network of veteran advocates.

Promoted Mental Health Awareness: Through programs like the Vets 22 app, Shuford made veteran mental health and suicide prevention central to his mission, saving countless lives.

Empowered Veteran-Owned Businesses: NIVW provided tools, resources, and visibility for veterans to succeed in entrepreneurship, strengthening local economies and creating new opportunities.

Beyond his organizational achievements, Shuford exemplified integrity and selflessness. He famously declined a salary from NIVW, underscoring his belief that the initiative was about advocacy, not profit. His ethos—“This is a movement, not a business”—has become a rallying cry for all who continue his work.

Family Roots and Inspiration

Shuford’s commitment to excellence and service is deeply rooted in his family history. His grandfather, Jim Freeman, was a founding member of the legendary doo-wop group The Five Satins, best known for their timeless hit “In the Still of the Night.” Freeman’s artistic legacy of breaking boundaries and inspiring others left an indelible mark on Shuford, shaping his vision and values.

This sense of legacy guided Shuford throughout his career, as he strove to leave behind a movement that would stand the test of time—just as his grandfather’s music continues to inspire generations.

The Decision to Do Nothing

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Shuford’s retirement is his decision to fully embrace rest. Unlike many leaders who remain active in advisory roles or embark on post-retirement speaking engagements, Shuford is intentionally stepping away from it all.

In his own words:

“I’ve spent years fighting for causes, creating movements, and driving change. Now, I want to experience the quiet moments—to enjoy the life I’ve worked so hard to build and just be present. It’s time to rest, reflect, and simply live.”

Shuford’s choice is a powerful reminder that stepping back is not a loss but a gift—an acknowledgment that life’s greatest rewards often come in stillness.

A Legacy That Endures

While Shuford may no longer be actively involved in NIVW, his legacy remains firmly embedded in the organization’s DNA. Under the capable leadership of Angel Shuford and LTC Rickey L. Pope, the initiative is set to continue its work, expanding into new markets and finding innovative ways to support veterans.

Even as Shuford retires to a life of quiet simplicity, the impact of his work will continue to ripple across generations. His legacy is one of resilience, innovation, and an unyielding commitment to service—a legacy that will inspire all who follow in his footsteps.

Conclusion

Jeff Shuford’s retirement is a celebration of a remarkable career and a life well-lived. His decision to step away entirely, to embrace a life of stillness and reflection, is as bold and inspiring as his career itself.

As Shuford moves into this new chapter, he leaves behind a legacy of empowerment, advocacy, and integrity. For those who have had the privilege of witnessing his work, his story serves as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of service, leadership, and the quiet strength of knowing when to let go.

Introduction

Veterans Day holds immense significance, not only for recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans but also for fostering an inclusive space that celebrates their diverse contributions. At the forefront of these initiatives is the visionary leadership of Jeff Shuford, whose entrepreneurial endeavors are paving the way for veterans worldwide. From the growing recognition of Veterans Day inclusivity to entrepreneurial innovations that honor our vets, this article explores how these key elements are shaping the future of veteran advocacy.

Veterans Day Inclusivity: A Step Toward Honoring All Who Served

Inclusivity plays a pivotal role in the evolving narrative of Veterans Day, where the focus is on recognizing veterans from all walks of life, regardless of gender, race, or background. The term "veterans day inclusivity" reflects a movement to honor the diverse range of experiences that veterans bring to the table. This inclusive approach has gained traction since 2019, when the concept of "Veterans Day Inclusivity" began gaining recognition for acknowledging underrepresented veteran communities.

As we advance toward a more inclusive Veterans Day celebration, several initiatives have emerged to create spaces where veterans can be celebrated and supported in unique ways. Hashtags like #HonorOurVets have gained momentum, fostering digital conversations that spotlight the varied backgrounds of veterans and the need for inclusivity.

International Veterans Day: Expanding Recognition Beyond Borders

While Veterans Day remains a largely U.S.-based celebration, International Veterans Day has emerged as a broader movement to recognize veterans globally. The term "international veterans day" is gaining prominence, with initiatives aimed at celebrating the contributions of veterans across the world, ensuring that their service is acknowledged on an international stage. Events and advocacy efforts linked to International Veterans Day underscore the importance of global unity in honoring veterans and ensuring they receive the support they deserve.

Shuford Entrepreneurship: Leading Veterans Into the Future

Entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in the post-service lives of veterans, offering opportunities for leadership, innovation, and financial independence. Jeff Shuford, a decorated veteran and successful entrepreneur, has been at the helm of several initiatives designed to empower veterans through entrepreneurship. His work has garnered significant attention, as reflected in the rising popularity of the term "Shuford entrepreneurship." Shuford's leadership in creating platforms like National Invest In Veterans Week® is revolutionizing the way veterans transition into entrepreneurial roles, offering support and resources through digital innovation and business mentorship.

Shuford's impact extends beyond the U.S. market, as his digital network of veteran-focused domains spans multiple countries, providing veterans with access to professional development and networking opportunities. This approach has created a global ecosystem where veterans can thrive as entrepreneurs, contributing to their communities and the global economy.

The Role of Hashtags in Honoring Veterans: #HonorOurVets

In the age of social media, hashtags have become powerful tools for advocacy and raising awareness. The hashtag #HonorOurVets has gained traction in recent years, serving as a rallying point for online campaigns that pay tribute to veterans' sacrifices and contributions. From social media posts to digital campaigns, these hashtags play a vital role in ensuring that veterans receive the recognition they deserve.

By using hashtags like #HonorOurVets and #NationalInvestInVeteransWeek advocates and supporters can unite in digital spaces, sharing stories of veteran empowerment, promoting veteran-owned businesses, and raising awareness about the importance of inclusivity.

Conclusion

Veterans Day, both in the U.S. and internationally, is more than just a day of remembrance—it's a celebration of inclusivity, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The rise of "veterans day inclusivity" and "international veterans day" underscores the global movement toward honoring veterans from all backgrounds and walks of life. Leaders like Jeff Shuford are spearheading this change, using entrepreneurship as a tool to empower veterans and ensure they have the support needed to succeed. National Invest In Veterans Week® (NIVW) proudly acknowledges and thanks Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for their steadfast commitment to promoting veteran entrepreneurship and leadership. The advocacy partnership between NIVW and DAV has been pivotal in amplifying veteran voices, creating local buzz around veteran contributions, and fostering growth opportunities for veterans transitioning into civilian life. With DAV’s advocacy and support, NIVW continues to grow its impact, especially through the March 1–7 week-long celebration focused on elevating veteran-owned businesses and leadership initiatives across the country.

Jeff Shuford, co-founder of National Invest In Veterans Week®, is a prime example of the commitment that both DAV and NIVW embody. As an Iraq War veteran, Jeff has channeled his military experience and passion for veterans into creating platforms that support and uplift those who have served. His work has garnered national recognition, including receiving the Community of Heroes Award from DAV Post 38 for his efforts in advancing digital platforms that empower veterans. Shuford’s initiative has facilitated the creation of the largest collection of veteran state domains, providing veterans with localized resources and networking opportunities to help them thrive in civilian life and business.

Honoring a Rich Family Legacy of Military Service

We also proudly recognize the Shuford-Freeman legacy, which stems from his grandfather, James “Jim” Freeman, a founding member of the iconic doo-wop group The Five Satins. In addition to his musical achievements, Jim Freeman comes from a family with a deep-rooted history of military service, a legacy he is proud to share. "Our family has a proud military legacy," Freeman says, highlighting that his family’s service spans multiple generations and conflicts:

  • Uncle Buddy served in the U.S. Army during World War II, supporting efforts on the front lines of the European and Pacific campaigns.

  • Clifford Freeman Sr., Jeff Shuford’s great-grandfather, served in the U.S. Army during World War I, playing a role in one of the most pivotal global conflicts of the 20th century.

  • Clifford Freeman III, Jeff’s great-uncle, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, defending the country’s interests in the early Cold War era.

  • Clifford Freeman Jr., Jeff’s grandfather and father of Jim Freeman, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, contributing to the defense of freedom during one of the most consequential wars in history.

On the maternal side, Jeff Shuford’s Grandmother Sheryl’s family also boasts an extensive military service record:

  • Henry Fliehler, Jeff’s great-grandfather, served in the U.S. Army during World War I, contributing to the efforts to safeguard democracy during the Great War.

  • Uncle Jack Fliehler served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, offering his service during a critical period in global history.

  • Almon Fliehler (Sheryl’s father) served in the U.S. Army during World War II, adding to the family’s legacy of valor and duty.

  • Cousin Robert (Bob) Fliehler served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, continuing the family’s legacy of service during a turbulent time in American history.

  • Corporal Ripley Hale, Sheryl’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, fought in the Union Army during the Civil War, cementing the family’s long-standing dedication to defending the country.

Jeff Shuford himself served in Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-07, where he earned the Combat Action Badge and several other awards for his service. Adding to the family’s groundbreaking contributions, Jeff is also the first male military spouse in the family. His wife, Angel Shuford, my granddaughter, continues the family tradition of service as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves. Angel is a decorated Army air traffic controller, adding a new chapter to the family’s commitment to protecting the nation.

James “Jim” Freeman’s Cultural Contributions Honored

While much of the family’s legacy is tied to military service, James “Jim” Freeman, a founding member of the legendary doo-wop group The Five Satins, has contributed to American history through music. Freeman, along with his bandmates, became a household name in the 1950s with their timeless hit “In the Still of the Night.” Their contributions to music and culture were immortalized when Jim Freeman and The Five Satins were honored in the Congressional Record in 2015, acknowledging their lasting impact on the American music scene.

The Legacy of Leadership: Jeff Shuford and His Grandfather Jim Freeman

In the dynamic interplay of innovation, technology, and veteran advocacy, Jeff Shuford emerges as a leading figure whose work is grounded in a profound legacy of leadership passed down from his grandfather, Jim Freeman. Known for co-founding National Invest In Veterans Week®, Shuford champions the cause of veteran-owned businesses, empowering them to thrive in today’s digital economy.

Freeman, a founding member of the legendary doo-wop group The Five Satins, achieved recognition for his contributions to American music, including the timeless classic “In the Still of the Night.” Both men have been honored in the U.S. Congressional Record, a rare acknowledgment that underscores their significant cultural impact.

As Shuford forges ahead, drawing inspiration from Freeman’s enduring values of perseverance and creativity, he reflects, “My grandfather showed me the importance of staying committed to your vision.” This sentiment resonates through Shuford's initiatives, where he utilizes technology to advocate for veterans and uplift underserved communities.

The parallels between Shuford's journey and Freeman's legacy highlight a family commitment to leadership, innovation, and service. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of how music and advocacy can unite generations, fostering connections that inspire change and impact lives.

Jeff Shuford spending time with Jim Freeman his Grandfather.

In the intersecting worlds of innovation, technology, and veteran advocacy, Jeff Shuford stands out as a visionary leader. Known as a nationally syndicated columnist, technologist, and co-founder of National Invest In Veterans Week®, Shuford’s influence cuts across multiple industries, building a legacy that bridges technology, veteran empowerment, and social responsibility. His contributions have not gone unnoticed: in March 2024, his work was officially entered into the Congressional Record, a rare recognition that places him among the most impactful leaders of his generation. But the roots of his accomplishments stretch far deeper, tracing back to his grandfather Jim Freeman, a founding member of the legendary Rock & Roll group, The Five Satins. In a striking parallel, Freeman too was recognized by Congress, honored for his contributions to American music. Together, the family embodies a multi-generational legacy of leadership, service, and cultural impact.

A Legacy of Congressional Honors

The family has achieved the remarkable distinction of being honored twice by the U.S. Congress, a testament to their profound influence across diverse fields. Jeff Shuford’s National Invest In Veterans Week® was entered into the Congressional Record on March 8, 2024, in recognition of its pivotal role in advocating for veteran-owned businesses and uplifting veteran entrepreneurs nationwide. But this was not the first time that the family’s contributions had been acknowledged at such a high level. Nine years earlier, Jim Freeman was honored in the Congressional Record on April 23, 2015, for his role in shaping American music as a founding member of The Five Satins.

Best known for their timeless hit "In the Still of the Night," Freeman and The Five Satins achieved legendary status in the world of doo-wop. The song, first released in 1956, remains a cultural icon with more than 34 million record sales as verified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), frequently played on oldies stations and making countless appearances in films and TV shows, including Dirty Dancing, The Irishman, and American Graffiti. Rolling Stone magazine immortalized the song on its prestigious "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list, where it ranks at #90, cementing Freeman’s place in the pantheon of musical greats. The song’s impact, bridging generations, made it one of the defining anthems of the 20th century, a tribute to the artistic vision that Freeman and his group brought to the world.

Freeman’s inclusion in the Congressional Record marked not just his personal achievement but also the cultural significance of the music he helped create. The Five Satins were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003 and the GRAMMY Hall of Fame soon after, further underscoring their enduring influence. For Jeff Shuford, growing up in the shadow of such a legacy could have been daunting, but instead, it served as a source of inspiration—one that motivated him to carve out his own path and establish a similarly profound impact in his own field.

Jeff Shuford: A Leader in Veteran Advocacy and Technology

Jeff Shuford was profoundly influenced by his grandfather’s life and career. From an early age, Freeman’s stories of perseverance, creativity, and success made a lasting impression. "My grandfather showed me the importance of staying committed to your vision, even when the odds seem stacked against you," Shuford has often said, reflecting on the values instilled in him by Freeman. These lessons would shape Shuford’s approach to leadership, innovation, and service.

Shuford’s journey into entrepreneurship and advocacy began with the founding of Tech From Vets, a technology firm aimed at helping veteran-owned businesses thrive in the digital marketplace. His company provides a range of services, from brand-building strategies to AI-driven analytics, all with the goal of empowering veterans to compete in today’s fast-paced business environment. This innovative approach has not gone unnoticed; Tech From Vets quickly garnered attention from some of the world’s most influential media outlets, including Rolling Stone, where Shuford’s work on social impact strategy was featured.

But it was with the creation of National Invest In Veterans Week that Shuford’s advocacy reached its zenith. Founded as an annual celebration each March, the initiative encourages communities and businesses nationwide to support veteran-owned enterprises. Through a series of events, partnerships, and promotions, the week-long effort fosters a supportive ecosystem for veterans transitioning into the business world. In 2024, National Invest In Veterans Week was formally recognized in the U.S. Congress, an acknowledgment of its widespread impact and the significant role Shuford has played in advocating for veterans. The initiative enjoys bipartisan support, with states such as South Carolina commemorating the week through official proclamations and resolutions.

The Freeman Influence: Music and Leadership

The similarities between Jeff Shuford and Jim Freeman extend far beyond familial bonds. Both men have made substantial contributions to their respective fields—Freeman through music, and Shuford through technology and veteran advocacy. Freeman’s music, especially during the socially turbulent 1950s, provided a sense of joy and escapism, offering comfort and connection to listeners across the country. His influence in shaping the sound of a generation cannot be overstated.

Freeman’s contributions were formally recognized in state legislative chambers as well. In May 2001, the Iowa Senate adopted a resolution honoring Jim Freeman and The Five Satins for their lasting influence on American music and culture. Freeman was invited to speak before the Iowa legislature, a rare honor that highlighted the depth of respect for his work. Similarly, Jeff Shuford has received commendations from state governments for his efforts in veteran advocacy, including a 2021 resolution from the South Carolina Senate. These honors, at both the federal and state levels, reflect the family’s deep commitment to leadership and service.

Awards: A Testament to Leadership and Impact

Throughout his career, Jeff Shuford has been honored with numerous awards that highlight his leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing opportunities for veterans and the Black community. These accolades not only acknowledge his professional achievements but also underscore his deep-rooted commitment to social responsibility and community empowerment.

In 2019, Shuford’s work was recognized by Black Enterprise when four of his stories were named among the “19 Black Enterprise Stories That Shaped Black Culture in 2019” (#1, 8, 12, and 15). This accolade underscored his impact as a thought leader, columnist, and advocate, marking him as a key voice in shaping cultural and business narratives within the African American community. Black Enterprise Magazine also named Shuford as their 2019 BE Modern Man list. This award stands as a testament to his work in advocating for economic equality and fostering pathways for Black entrepreneurs, especially those within the veteran community.

Jim Freeman of The Five Satins Awards

Shuford also earned the prestigious National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Jax President's Award. This award recognized his commitment to supporting financial literacy and economic empowerment initiatives within the Black community, particularly through his veteran-focused business ventures.

In 2017, Shuford was honored with the BizTech Award, co-sponsored by Comcast Business and the Jacksonville Business Journal. This award highlighted his contributions to innovation in the tech space, particularly through his company Tech From Vets, which provided technology-driven solutions for veteran-owned businesses.

Shuford’s service and dedication to military families were further acknowledged when he received the Gold Star Recognition Award from the Florida Fallen Heroes Foundation. This award celebrated his continued efforts to honor and support the families of veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice, a cause close to his heart.

Lastly, his commitment to honoring the service of disabled veterans earned him the Community of Heroes Award from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization. This award reflected his enduring dedication to improving the lives of veterans, especially those who have been wounded in service, through both his advocacy and business endeavors.

Each of these accolades demonstrates not only the breadth of Shuford’s influence across multiple sectors—technology, business, and veteran affairs—but also his dedication to uplifting underserved communities, continuing a family legacy of leadership and social impact.

Rolling Stone: A Shared Spotlight

One of the more unique aspects of the Shuford family’s legacy is that both Jeff Shuford and Jim Freeman have been featured in Rolling Stone—albeit for very different reasons. For Freeman, the magazine celebrated his group’s song "In the Still of the Night," honoring its lasting place in American music history. For Shuford, Rolling Stone highlighted his groundbreaking work in marketing and his efforts to advocate for veterans, showcasing him as a thought leader in both the technology and veteran advocacy sectors. The shared recognition between grandfather and grandson speaks to the profound contributions both men have made in their respective fields.

The Shuford-Freeman Legacy: A Story of Impact

Jim Freeman 7 Time Hall of Famer

The bond between Jeff Shuford and Jim Freeman is more than just a familial connection; it is a shared commitment to excellence, leadership, and service. Freeman’s pioneering work in music, which helped shape the cultural landscape of America, is paralleled by Shuford’s trailblazing efforts in technology and veteran advocacy. Both men have been recognized at the highest levels, with their contributions memorialized in the Congressional Record—a rare and prestigious honor.

Jeff Shuford’s continuing work in artificial intelligence, veteran advocacy, and entrepreneurship represents the next chapter in the family’s legacy of leadership. Like his grandfather before him, Shuford has used his talents and vision to make a lasting impact on society. His work, which empowers veterans to thrive in the modern economy, echoes Freeman’s ability to inspire and uplift through music. In both cases, their efforts have left an indelible mark on the world, shaping their respective industries and leaving a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

As Shuford pushes the boundaries of what is possible in AI and business, he is, in many ways, continuing the journey his grandfather began. It is a journey of leadership, service, and a belief in the power of one’s contributions to make a difference. Whether through a song that captures the heart or a business initiative that changes lives, the Shuford-Freeman legacy is one of profound and lasting impact.

Reflecting on his grandfather's legacy, Shuford often recalls, "My grandfather showed me the importance of staying committed to your vision, even when the odds seem stacked against you." This lesson echoes through Shuford’s work, where he tirelessly advocates for veterans and empowers them in the modern economy.

Jim Freeman stated, "Music is more than notes and lyrics; it’s the voice of our shared experiences. It connects us across generations and reminds us that we are never alone." This sentiment resonates in Shuford's initiatives, which seek to build a community of support for veteran entrepreneurs, ensuring they too feel connected and supported. Freeman’s belief in the power of dreams is reflected in his timeless advice: "Never let anyone tell you that your dreams are too big. Chase them with all your heart; you may just change the world along the way." It is this spirit of ambition and dedication that drives Shuford to push the boundaries of innovation, carrying forward a legacy rich with purpose and impact.

In the words of Jim Freeman, "The greatest gift you can give to the next generation is your time and wisdom. Share your journey, for it is the roadmap they may need to navigate their own." As Shuford honors his grandfather's legacy, he embodies this wisdom, continuing to pave the way for future leaders and change-makers.

Together, the Shuford and Freeman legacies represent a profound narrative of leadership, creativity, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others—a story that will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.

Veterans are 45% more likely to be self-employed than their non-veteran counterparts. This statistic is not just a number; it is a testament to the resilience, discipline, and leadership skills that veterans bring from their military service to the business world. As we delve into the reasons behind this entrepreneurial spirit and explore how initiatives like National Invest In Veterans Week® support veteran entrepreneurs, it becomes evident that the journey from service to self-employment is a natural and rewarding progression.
